Seal the Deal: Top DIY Guide to Weatherize Your Home & Keep Those Drafts at Bay

Feeling like money is flying out the window? Well, it might be! Let’s seal it up with our weatherization guide:

Step 1: Check for Leaks (literally, this is where money is flying out)

  • First things first, assess your home for air leaks. Look for signs of air leaks such as drafts, visible gaps, cracks, and holes around doors and windows, and other exterior features.

Step 2. Weatherize Your Windows

  • Now that you found where the air is flowing, it’s time to weatherize - starting with windows. Install weatherstripping and caulk around the window frames to help reduce air leaks.

  • Add insulated curtains or shades to help keep your home cozy all year long.

  • Looks for window upgrade rebates or tax credits.

Step 3. Weatherize Your Doors

  • Keep the cold air out and the warm air in(or vice versa) by instaling weatherstripping or weather-resistant foam around the frame of your door. You can also add a door sweep or threshold to help keep air from coming through the bottom of the door (happens more than you realize).

Step 4. Seal Gaps Around Exterior Features

  • Believe it or not, there are gaps in your siding, trim, and other exterior features. Inspect and seal around pipes, vents, and other openings to help prevent air leaks.

  • Seal it up with caulk or other appropriate sealants.

Step 5. Insulate Your Attic

  • FYI, heat rises - so don’t let it escape through your attic! Add insulation to the attic floor to help keep the heat in..

  • Consider adding a vent fan to help reduce moisture build-up and keep the attic cooler.

Step 6. Install a Programmable Thermostat

  • Save energy and money by installing a programmable thermostat. Set it to a lower temperature when you’re away from home and a higher temperature when you’re at home.

  • Pro tip: use the thermostat’s timer to adjust the temperature automatically during different times of day.

Step 7. Seal Air Ducts

  • Inspect your home’s air ducts for any gaps or cracks and seal it up with…sealant (original, we know). Proper insulation will help keep the air temperature regulated.

Step 8. Install an Energy-Efficient HVAC System

  • Consider upgrading to an energy-efficient HVAC system. Proper maintenance and cleaning of your HVAC system will keep it running efficiently.

Take these steps, and you’ll easily save money and make your home more comfortable. Go on, grab your caulk gun and get on it!
